2. Visit White Spanish Villages

There are numerous beautiful white spanish villages dotted around the countryside. Each one has something unique to discover. Below are just a few suggestions.

Village La Vinuela

The village of La Vinuela is situated 3 kms from Villa Paula. The village was originally a muleteers’ stop on the long, hot and winding road from Velez-Malaga to Alhama de Granada. And to this day a restaurant, Venta La Viña, stands on the site of the original inn where travellers would stop off to quench their thirsts.

Today La Viñuela is a sleepy little village of just under 2,000 inhabitants, that drops down gently to a babbling stream at the bottom. In the new part for the village you will find a supermarket, doctor’s surgery, pharmacy, bank, play area, cafes and a handful of restaurants. Lower down the village you will find the beautiful narrow spanish streets, one with the San Jose Church.

In La Viñuela village San José church is a pleasant little place. While it’s a primarily 18th-century structure, parts of it date back to the 16th century.

Village Alcaucin

Alcaucin is 5 kms from Villa Paula. Known for its beautiful landscapes, Alcaucín is a village that overlooks the Natural Park of Sierras de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama. Its environment makes it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. The Fuente de los Cinco Caños is a real local icon, its waters come from a source that has never ceased to spout. But think twice before quenching your thirst: the tradition says that whoever drinks from the centre pipe finds their husband or wife in the village.

La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, next to the town hall, is one of the most outstanding buildings of Alcaucín. It was built in the seventeenth century, consisting of two buildings and has a rococo style dressing room. The temple houses interesting works of art, such as the tallas del Niño Jesús, the Inmaculada Concepción, the Nazareno and the Virgen de los Dolores. Near the cemetery of Alcaucín is the eighteenth century Ermita de Jesús del Calvario. You can get a good panoramic of the surrounding villages from this baroque cut sanctuary.

Comares Village

Comares is a very nice town to visit. Its perched right on top of a cliff with a footprint trail to follow.

It is one of the highest white villages in Andalucía at 739 metres above sea level, Comares can be spied for miles around, rising high above the surrounding countryside and resembling a natural extension to the craggy rock face. First time visitors may still find the approach baffling in the fact that the village keeps disappearing from view as the windy country roads dip and curve.

The village remains typically Moorish in its layout and design with narrow cobbled streets, interspersed with arches,  flanked with simple whitewashed houses. Park by the modern entrance arch to the village and walk up to the main square. Take a rest in Bar La Plaza before taking the ‘village walk’ following the route laid out by the blue ceramic foot prints. It takes about an hour. If you are short of time you can take a short cut back to the square missing out the castle. The square is open on one side and affords spectacular views. On the door of the town hall is a holder for leaflets and a tourist map of the village. if there are none left, take a photo of the ceramic wall map.

Village Competa

Long known as the pearl of the Axarquía. Competa is located seven hundred metres above sea level. It has stunning views of the surrounding mountains, countryside and Mediterranean. Competa is best known to many for its locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiestas here is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine) held mid August which features a programme of flamenco and sevillana music and dance, plus plenty of free-flowing vino.

9. Walk up the Chillar River (Rio Chillar) in Nerja

This is a lovely family walk up the river Chillar.  Most of the walk is on the river bed, the water generally ankle high, but can get to knee high at some parts.  It takes 6-7 hours to complete the hold walk up and down, but you can always just go as far as you are comfortable with.

The following are a few tips.

Footwear: You should choose comfortable sporty footwear that can get wet, and that will protect your ankle. Keep in mind that you are going to walk on wet and slippery stones. We do not recommend using flip-flops or sandals.

Suncream and a hatHighly recommended, especially in July and August. It is a long walk and the sun is always present.

Food, water, sport drinks: You should pack very well before you set off because you will be in the middle of nature.

Pro tip: You will have to carry whatever you put in your bag the whole distance, so try and spread everything out with the other members of your group.

Although there are a good few kilometers to cover, the walk is very satisfying. The scenery you will take in during the walk is more than worth the effort.
